SALT LAKE CITY — In an effort to mitigate traffic impacts and enhance community benefits, the Utah Inland Port Authority (UIPA) board approved a funding agreement with Salt Lake City to expand the Trainfo system. This initiative will bring upgrades to several key intersections in the city, particularly benefiting the West Side community.
Under the approved funding agreement, UIPA will provide an initial contribution of $150,000 to Salt Lake City for sensors and equipment necessary to expand the Trainfo system. This funding marks a significant step toward full implementation at five key railroad crossings—300 North, 200 South, 800 South, 900 South, and 1700 South—with additional investments anticipated from other transportation partners to complete the project.
“The Trainfo expansion is a prime example of how strategic investments in infrastructure can lead to tangible improvements in safety and efficiency,” said Ben Hart, executive director of the Utah Inland Port Authority. “We are proud to partner with Salt Lake City on this important initiative.”
The Trainfo system provides real-time information and coordination related to railroad crossings, helping to minimize traffic disruptions and enhance public safety. Salt Lake City has already invested in the initial installation of Trainfo equipment, and this expansion will build upon that foundation.
“We are excited to see the expansion move forward,” said Dan Bergenthal, Salt Lake City transportation engineer and Trainfo Pilot Program manager. “It will allow for more comprehensive coverage and better serve the community with timely and accurate information about railroad crossing activities.”
The funding agreement specifies that Salt Lake City’s Transportation Division will oversee the expenditure of the funds and the implementation of the Trainfo system expansion. The city will also be responsible for obtaining necessary approvals and permits.
This collaboration between Salt Lake City and UIPA is expected to bring improvements to traffic flow and overall quality of life on the West Side.
